hello, friend!

Oh wow, if you're wondering who this random ghost is who's suddenly appeared, it wouldn't be surprising - the last time I wrote a journal entry here was 7 years ago (where does time go? because I certainly have no flipping idea)

Anyway, hello again! I'm Desiree and I've mainly been pottering around collecting new fandoms, flailing on How To Adult IRL and occasionally posting art on Tumblr/Twitter/Instagram for the past few years. I recently got hit with a pang of nostalgia and realised how much life went undocumented without these journal entries, and want to get back into semi-regularly writing again.

I'm also keen to dip my toes into Dreamwidth dev (webdev being my day job now, go figure) in the near future, and figured it would be useful to reacquaint myself with all the things :)

I would love to reconnect with anyone who's still hanging around (old friends and new!), so please do say hi or drop a comment with whatever you're into right now! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Holy crap! Um, that's all I got. Hi! I don't do much fandom and I'm officially over my given name and going by SJ both on- and offline now. I'm into grassroots organizing and law school, and I'd love to hear about webdev because I wish I were doing that, too. >_>

She's baaaaack! :) Here I was thinking that all the cool people had gone to Tumblr... I am still a student and putting off Becoming An Adult With A Proper Job until my PhD finishes.

Tumblr is good for art posts, you're right, and all the funny gifs and so on, but I really can't shake the fact that it's a hopeless interface for having a conversation with someone. I mainly hang around Victoria fans and the art-heavy Man in the High Castle blog. I used to read a lot of posts from Game of Thrones fans (or A Song of Ice and Fire, although they'd probably lynch me for daring to group the two together!) but I just became really sick of how everything had to be trigger-warned and politically correct and any dissension was met with "YOURE GROSS AND ABLEIST/RACIST/AGEIST/SEXIST/HOMOPHOBIC!!" In Ye Olden Days of LJ, Angelfire and Yahoo Groups people only shouted like that for ship wars! Maybe we're just internet grannies? :D

I have been so incredibly busy with the dreaded thesis. There is so much that I want to write, fandom-wise, which I've been putting off by signing up to fic exchanges. My personal journalling is probably ancient and cobweb-ridden as well. I think the last time I wrote anything about RL was December 2015! How is your art going? I remember you did some amazing stuff on DA (now there's something I haven't visited since my fanfiction.net days...).

Oh, you'll love The Man in the High Castle. It's very different to the book, but the amazing world-building is still there, and some excellent new characters have been added. The moment Rufus Sewell turned up on screen I thought "Hey, it's Petruchio from Taming of the Shrew...in an SS uniform?!" (No prizes for guessing who my favourite character is!) The show does have some serious flaws but the sets and the costumes and the secondary characters kept me watching even when I had to slog through the love triangle of the totally un-likeable three protagonists.

I love that "performative SJ" term! I think you hit the nail on the head, really: it is all of the stuff we used to see with ship wars and character bashing but cloaked in some odd idea that everything we consume has to correlate with how we act and believe in real life, which is crazy. Isn't a key point of fandom being a vicarious escape from RL? sigh I'm so glad I'm not the only internet granny around who finds this weird and tiresome!

How is High Castle going? The love triangle dismantles itself fast in S2, don't worry. I'd love to hear your perspective on the Pacific States plot(s) because I am really clueless about Imperial Japan in terms of customs and history and stuff. The tumblr blog I was thinking of was "joexjuliana" which has lots of gifs and if John Smith is more your historical aesthetic then "madamgrandadmiral" and "frederiksewell" are both great blogs.

RL also gets a lot on my way so don't worry! xD, and same! I never got to experience LiveJournal completely so here I have a chance with Dreamwidth! Plus is a much safer space since tumblr has become...so toxic, don't get me started on what happened to the Star Wars fandom :(, so at @anghraine's recommendation I decided to make this journal! I'm glad to find more people here! \^O^/
